And while we had hoped this headline might apply to the Canucks’ franchise 40 year Stanley Cup drought, we are relieved that this season (the longest ever in team history) has finally come to an end.

And while, upon reflection, it will become a season to celebrate, right now it’s impossible to feel anything but disappointment.

The players and coaches will all say the right things about having left it all out there in this strangely epic Stanley Cup Final.  But from this vantage point, we can’t help but think about the lack of anything resembling a sixty minute effort in the three games in Boston from the goaltender on out. 

Back in 1994, it was easy to feel that the Canucks got jobbed by some phantom calls in the decisive game 7, not to mention a Nathan Lafayette goal post.  Unlike this time around, the Canucks were wearing their opponent down - with another few clicks on that clock, we might have just tied it.  Indeed,  in 1994, it seemed we deserved more.

This time around, when it came to crunch time you never got the sense that Roberto Luongo was going to make a clutch save or that our elite forwards were ever going to find the back of the net behind the seemingly ever expanding Tim Thomas.  In 2011, it seems the seven game series result flattered the locals.

So what happened?  How did a Cup win that seemed almost certain just over a week ago come so quickly off the rails?  And what does this mean for the future of this team? There are many questions.  And there will be answers.  But not today.  Because it’s over.
